Dorothy M. Higgins Feb. 8, 1907 - Oct. 5, 2008
GLENWOOD -- Dorothy M. "Dottie" Higgins, 101, of Villard died Sunday at the Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at All Saints Chapel in Glenwood.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are by the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. Memorials are preferred to the Villard United Methodist Church Building Fund and Glenwood Retirement Village.
She was born Feb. 8, 1907, in Lancaster, Wis., to John and Ursula (Salis) Marlow. They lived in Lancaster and Monroe, Wis., and Greeley, Iowa, before moving to Mankato in 1914. She graduated from high school in Mankato and from Mankato Teachers College. She taught elementary school in the Methodist Orphanage in Lake Bluff, Ill., in Yankton, S.D., and in Hinsdale, Mont.
She married W. Allen Higgins on June 14, 1929. They moved from Mankato to Sun City, Ariz., in 1970, where she stayed until her return to Minnesota in 1996.
She was active in her church, woman's society, Sunday school, Church Women United, and garden and study clubs. She did volunteer work for 25 years at Boswell Hospital in Sun City and served as chairman of the Lakeview United Methodist Church library for over 20 years. She was also a member of the church choir and hand bell choir. She was a 50-year member of the Orders of Eastern Star and White Shrine and was Worthy High Priestess of the latter.
She is survived by her children: Jack (and Debra Baumgardner) Higgins of Moss Beach, Calif., and Sharon (and Marlan) Johnson of Villard; six grandchildren; and six great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1979; son: William Allen Higgins Jr. in 1975; and two sisters.
