Doug van der Hagen

Doug van der Hagen, age 87, of Bird Island, Minnesota died Sunday, May 11, 2014 at his home in Bird Island. Mass of Christian Burial is Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Marys Catholic Church in Bird Island with Rev. George Schmit as celebrant. Burial is in the church cemetery with military rites by the Bird Island American Legion. Visitation is Friday from 4-7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island. Visitation continues Saturday at the church for one hour prior to the service. Memorials are preferred to St. Marys School or Renville County Hospice.

Douglas John van der Hagen was born February 17, 1927 at Bird Island, MN to William and Blanche (Welsh) van der Hagen. He grew up at Bird Island where he graduated from St. Marys High School. Doug served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and upon coming home attended school at University of St. Thomas. He moved back to Bird Island and started working various jobs. Doug was united in marriage to Margie Bernhagen on June 20, 1950 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island. He was the territorial manager for Northrup King retiring from there after a lifelong career. Doug received great pleasure in spending time with his seven grandsons and sixteen great-grandchildren. "Grandpa Doug" also enjoyed supporting other young people in the community and attending their activities. He was an avid hunter, enjoyed golf, watching baseball, traveling, listening to his "Bose" sound system, giving out Christmas cookies and candies, round table group at the Broaster and Saturday nights at Athmann's. Doug gave back to his community by volunteering for meals on wheels, the Renville County Fair, and the Renville County Heartland Express for 15 years. He loved his family and especially family reunions. Doug was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island.

Doug is survived by his two children: Nancy (and Otto) Naujokas of Paynesville, MN and Mike (and Lou) van der Hagen of Bird Island, MN; his seven grandchildren: Michael Naujokas of Paynesville, MN, Alex Naujokas (and special friend Laura) of Paynesville, MN, Jarad (and Jessie) van der Hagen of Villard, MN, Dustin (and Amanda) van der Hagen of Raymond, MN, Troy (and Charlotte) Bohm of Loveland, Colorado, Ben (and Kelli) Bohm of Mankato, MN, and Cody (and Tina) Bohm of Albertville, MN; his 16 great-grandchildren; his one brother, Robert (and Dottie) van der Hagen of Bird Island, MN; and his four sisters: Joan (and Doug) McCalla of Apple Valley, MN, Katie OLoughlin of Beaverton, OR, Mary Lou Didier of Valley City, ND and Dorothy (and Tom) Swanback of Longmont, CO. Doug was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margie, his daughter and son-in-law, Cindi Bohm and Bobby Bohm; and his brothers and sisters: William Jr., Bernard, Frank, Marjorie, Russell, Marlys and Roger van der Hagen.
