Drifting snow is making roads icy in west central Minnesota

WILLMAR — Drifting snow that’s sticking on warm, wet highways is causing icy conditions today on county and state roads in west central Minnesota.

Some roads also have sizable drifts in rural areas because of blowing snow.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is reporting that roads are in “fair” driving condition with a crash reported on state Highway 23 south of Willmar and a spin-out on U.S. Highway 212 near Granite Falls.

MnDOT crews are out in force attempting to scrape snow off roads and applying sand to improve travel conditions.

Steady winds that are over 20 mph, along with afternoon temperatures in the 30s, created conditions that have made travel challenging.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Presidents Day tomorrow that includes blowing snow through tomorrow night that could lead to reduced visibility.

Temperatures are also expected to drop tomorrow, and that will also lead to slick spots on roadways, according to the weather service.
