The driver, identified as Justin Lee Pfannes, is recovering at St. Luke’s following the harrowing crash and a night outside in the freezing cold.

Pfannes’ car smashed through a guardrail along Duluth’s Congdon Boulevard, flew 60 feet off a cliff and bounced off a boulder before coming to a rest just feet from Lake Superior sometime late Monday or early Tuesday, according to authorities and a witness who found Pfannes in the morning.

When discovered at about 7 a.m. Tuesday, the car’s engine was cold to the touch, indicating Pfannes had been there several hours. Pfannes was not wearing a jacket on a night when the temperature reached 17 degrees below zero.
