GLENWOOD -- Durol Lyman Melde, 82, of Glenwood, died Jan. 25 at Good Samaritan Society-Glenwood Lakeview in Glenwood.

The service will be at 2 p.m. today at Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood. Private burial will be in the spring at Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery.

He was born May 17, 1926, in Madison to Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Melde and was raised by his grandparents in southern Minnesota. He worked for the Madison City Water Department before enlisting in the Navy in 1944. He served his country until 1946 during World War II, spending time in the South Pacific. He then moved to Appleton and worked as an electrician at the flour mill.

He married Leatrice Joyce on May 17, 1946. They moved to Glenwood in 1963, and he worked for the Minnesota Department of Transportation for more than 20 years before retiring in 1988.

He was a member of the Glenwood Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his son: Lyman (and Beverly) Melde of Starbuck; daughter: Judy Rising; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sister: Honor Faye of Madison; and ex-wife: Leatrice Melde of Glenwood.

He was preceded in death by his son: Dennis in 2002.
