John “Eddie” Johnson was born in Bandon Township, Renville County, Minnesota, the son of John and Hilda (Kulberg) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed in his faith at Swedlanda Lutheran Church in Palmyra Township. Eddie grew up in Bandon Township where he attended Country School. He served in the United States Navy from 1942 until 1946, earning several awards and commendations. He was very proud of his service to his country.

On July 16, 1947, Eddie was united in marriage to Mary Jane (Janie) Peters at Christ Church in Detroit. Eddie and Janie made their home in Bandon Township where they raised their children. He was born to be a farmer and loved his time on the tractor; he strove to have the straightest rows, the cleanest fields, and the tallest corn. For a time, Eddie and Janie owned and operated the Dry Cleaners in Franklin with his brother Buzz, but the call of the land brought him back to the farm.

Eddie lived his life simply, following his strong Swedish sensibility in all things. He was honest and true to his principles, even when they were not popular with others. “Just do the right thing,” he’d say, “and everything will turn out the way it’s supposed to.” Always committed to serving others, Eddie enjoyed helping people throughout his entire life. He bowled for 60+ years in a number of leagues, sometimes bowling three or four nights a week, no matter the weather, even though weather dictated most of his life. He enjoyed baseball, playing town ball when he was younger and watching the Twins whenever he could as he grew older. He loved watching other sports as well, including football, basketball, and—of course—bowling. He was also good at fixing things, even with nothing more than a spool of wire and a nail or two. He and Mavis Erickson were fortunate to be together these last ten years, and when he retired from farming just two short years ago, they worked side by side mowing lawns and ditches, trimmed trees, cleaned groves, and occasionally danced in the dining room—activities that kept them both young. He was a model husband, father, brother, neighbor, and friend, showing all who knew him how to live a steady, fulfilling, meaningful life.

After short stays in the New Ulm Hospital and the Fairfax Community Home, Eddie entered Seasons (Hospice House) in Redwood Falls where he passed away peacefully the next day: Tuesday, December 11, 2012. He had reached the age of 90 years. Blessed be his memory.

Eddie is survived by his children: Corey Johnson of Sioux Falls and Marilyn Johnson of Florida, Kristin Vick and husband Doug of Raymond, Kathy Steffen and husband Bob of Watkins, Lisa Osthus and husband Todd of Clara City; grandchildren: Megan Vick, Morgan (Vick) Engstrom and husband Kevin, Jordan Vick, Bailey Steffen, and Saylor (Osthus) Skoglund and husband Matt; great-granddaughter: Madalyn Engstrom; loving companion: Mavis Erickson of Franklin; Kim Erickson and wife Sue of Apple Valley, and their children and grandchildren; LuAnn (Erickson) Heidebrink and husband Rollie of Dell Rapids, SD, and their children and grandchildren; sister Bernice Christenson of Gaylord; brother Gordy Johnson and wife Helen of Franklin; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

Eddie was preceded in death by his wife Janie, his daughter Helen, his parents, his brother Russell “Buzz” Johnson and wife Betty, and his brother Ernest Kulberg.
