WILLMAR -- The fifth annual meeting of Edina and Willmar didn't just go down to the final second -- it was decided in the last three-tenths of a second.

That's how much time was left on the clock, .03, when Edina inbounded under the Willmar basket trailing by a point.

Edina coach Pat Dorsey had set up a play off a time out.

Willmar packed in under the basket, hands raised high. Hornet junior guard Brendan Canova, looked left and then tossed the ball to Stephen Asp moving to the free-throw line. The senior captain shot quickly and the ball swished through in a shocking finish and a 57-56 Edina win.

Willmar (10-2) played from behind most of the game. Down 52-48 with 1:10 left, Jimmy Unger hit a three from the corner and at 30 seconds Sam Esboldt made a running reverse jump shot from 10 feet to make it 54-53 Edina.

With 10 seconds left, the Cardinals trailed 57-55. Taylor Filipek put up a 10-footer on the run that missed but the Cardinal senior grabbed the rebound and put the rebound back in and drew a foul. He made the free throw for a three-point play and a 56-55 lead with 7.7 left.

Canova drove to the Willmar basket and put off an awkward shot that bounced of the board and off a Willmar player out of bounds. With under a second left, Dorsey used his last time out -- productively.

Filipek finished with 21 points, leaving the Eastern Kentucky recruit 10 points short of 1,000. Unger scored 12 and so did Andrew Bangen, including nine points in the last 50 seconds of the first half on a pair of treys from each corner and a one-touch 16-footer at the buzzer.

Asp led the Hornets (6-7) with 14 points. Class AAAA Edina leads the series 4-1.
