Oh, what a Minnesota sports day it will be today -- Twins baseball and Vikings football at home, with the Gopher football team opening on the road.

Talk about a grand night for sports bars and restaurants around the state.

The Twins have a four-game lead on the Chicago White Sox as September home stretch began. Tonight's opponent -- Detroit -- remains more than 10 games back. Despite being in an offensive rut recently, the Twins still were able to come from behind for a narrow 2-1 victory Tuesday over the Tigers.

While some Twins are hurting and a couple key players are out, management has brought in some new talent and called up a couple of good players. If the Twins keep playing strong, they have a good shot at another division title come October.

The Vikings play their final preseason game tonight against the Denver Broncos. This will be the final Vikings tune-up before the NFL season opens.

On paper, Minnesota's pro football team is as strong as ever, with all starters back except for Sidney Rice who is out with an injury. The Vikings also drafted and signed some new talent to add to the mix.

Fans are excited as ever with longtime quarterback Brett Favre returning for his 20th season. Despite Favre's magic return, the Vikings are not the runaway favorite in the division. Packer backers and some experts are excited about Green Bay as well.

Overall, the Vikings' prospects look good for the 2010 season. So sit back and hold on to your seat.

The Gopher football team opens its season tonight on the road against Middle Tennessee State.

Gopher football has quite a bit of experience returning as well as some talented freshmen on the team. The team is getting little respect among college football reviewers. Nevertheless, hope springs eternal among Gopher fans.

So today is a good day to jump on that Minnesota sports bandwago. Besides, Wild and Gopher hockey is just around the corner.

Finally, high school football also opens tonight and Friday across west central Minnesota.

Oh, it is good to be a Minnesota sports fan today.
