Editorial: Klobuchar deserves 2nd term in Senate
Our U.S. Senate race features the incumbent U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, DFL, challenged by first-term legislator Kurt Bills, R-Rosemount.
It is a classic political mismatch as most Republican candidates passed on going up against Klobuchar, a very popular first-term senator.
Klobuchar, a former Hennepin County prosecutor, has transitioned very well into her senator role. She has set a political example -- for members of both parties -- on how to serve in her first term.
She has earned a second term with outstanding constituent service, demonstrating an ability to get things done, striking bipartisan partnerships and maximizing political teamwork to serve and meet the needs of all Minnesotans.
Klobuchar is an optimistic politician who believes in the future of Minnesota and the United States moving forward. Yet she is tough and fights hard when she needs to take a stand on issues of importance to west central Minnesota and the rest of the state, such as promoting broadband access in rural Minnesota, fighting for promised benefits of Minnesota Guardsmen or protecting children from bad toys or faulty pools.
This politician knows that compromise is not a four-letter word and understands it is a strategic part of the art of governing. The senator is not an ideologue. She understands that she represents all Minnesotans, which she does to the utmost of her political stature. For example, she fought for a Republican car dealer when his franchise was about to be closed.
Bills has struggled to find a message for his campaign. A high school economics teacher, he has focused primarily on the federal deficit resulting in little political traction. He is correct that the deficit is a leadership issue, but Minnesota is not a single-issue state.
As the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate representing Minnesota, Klobuchar has a unique ability to touch the crowd or the individual by listening or telling a folksy story. This political skill has served her well.
Klobuchar works hard on the issues that matter to people and she cares deeply for Minnesota and Minnesotans.
We believe voters should return Klobuchar for a second term in the U.S. Senate. She has earned such a vote of confidence.
