Editorial: Tourism merger is an idea to consider
Two Willmar-based tourism organizations are proposing to merge their efforts into one coordinated organization.
This is an idea worthy of further consideration.
Currently, there are two Willmar-based tourism efforts:
- Tourism committee of the Kandiyohi County and City of Willmar Economic Development Commission
- Willmar Lakes Area Convention and Visitors Bureau
The proposal to combine the tourism committee and the visitors bureau would have prudent cost savings, combine local tourism efforts and eliminate duplication of efforts.
This is a logical proposal since many of the Willmar and Kandiyohi County tourism needs are similar if not the same.
More importantly, the combination of the two efforts will make the new tourism effort more streamlined and enable a stronger tourism promotion effort. The partnership would provide for better financing of the local tourism efforts.
The tourism merger effort still needs further approval - by the CVB board, the EDC's governing board and the Willmar City Council.
Certainly streamlining the tourism promotion effort for Willmar and Kandiyohi County would help provide a consistent and unified marketing campaign.
We believe the governing bodies should give this merger proposal serious consideration for approval.
