ELCA bishop will speak at 2009 Mayor's Breakfast set for next week
WILLMAR -- Pastor Jon V. Anderson, bishop of Southwestern Minnesota Synod, ELCA, will be the featured speaker during the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast from 6:30 to 8 a.m. Thursday at the Willmar Conference Center. His topic will be "Holy Stones and Living Stones'' (reflections on a recent trip to Israel and Palestine).
Tickets for the sunrise breakfast buffet are $10 each and are available until today at local churches, service clubs, Cash Wise Foods, Cub Foods, Good News Bookstore, Walt's, Willmar City Offices and Dunn Bros. Anderson was born in Glenwood.
In 1981, he graduated from St. Olaf College in Northfield and later re-ceived a master of divinity degree fr-om Luther Seminary in St. Paul.
He served as an intern at Faith Lutheran in Dickinson, Texas, from 1983 to 1984; was associate pastor at Kinsmen Lutheran in Houston, Texas, from 1985 to 1991; was pastor at Atonement Lutheran in St. Cloud from 1991 to 1996; and was lead pastor at Christ the King in New Ulm from 1996 to 2003.
He began his six-year term as bishop in September 2003.
Anderson and his wife, Robyn, a watercolor artist, have three children.
Anderson has served in several areas with the church-wide organization: St. Louis Youth Gathering Design Team; Discipleship Task Force; Partner in Christian Education; and the Evangelism Task Force as a member of the Discipleship and Core Teams.
As bishop, Anderson serves on the Gustavus Adolphus Board of Trustees, Evangelical Outreach and Congregational Mission Unit Planning Committee, the Theological and Ethical Concerns subcommittee of the Conference of Bishops, and the Region 3 Assignment Team.
His publications include reviews for Luther Seminary's journal Word and World on the following books "The Message of Job,'' "Excellent Protestant Congregations'' and "Way to Live: Christian Practices for Teens; What Makes A Congregation Excellent?'' in Great Commission Congregations ELCA Newsletter, spring 2002.
