Eleanor Swanson Jan. 28, 1922 - Nov. 1, 2008

NEW LONDON -- Eleanor Mae Swanson, 86, of New London died Nov. 1.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Unitarian Universalist Church in Willmar.

Memorials preferred to the church or a hospice agency.

She was born Jan. 28, 1922, in Worthington to Benjamin and Martha (Jerabek) Smith. The family farmed near Rushmore, Silver Lake and then Pennock. She attended District 54 country school in Kandiyohi County through the eighth grade and graduated from Kerkhoven High School in 1939. She graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing in 1943. She joined the Army Nurse Corps in 1944 and spent 1½ years in England, France and Germany with the 200th General Hospital. She was discharged as a first lieutenant in 1946. She returned home, took flying lessons and earned a private pilot license.

She married Henning Thomsen in 1946. They lived in Moline, Ill., until 1953 when they moved to Orange, Texas. She worked as a nurse for 45 years including 15 years at Audie Murphy VA Hospital in San Antonio.

She married Lawrence Steberg in 1994. He died in 1995. She married Arden Swanson in 2000. He died in 2001.

She is survived by four children: Kathy (and Gordon) of Lake Charles, La., Mike (and Pamela) of Tecumseh, Mich., Patty Duhon of San Marcos, Texas, and Rick (and Linda) of Austin, Texas; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
