MADISON -- Emil Paul Zahnow, 91, of Madison, died Friday.
The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Madison. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Madison Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts.
Visitation will be this afternoon and evening, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, at Zahrbock Funeral Home in Madison.
He was born Jan. 1, 1918, in Arena Township, Lac qui Parle County, to Otto and Augusta (Goetsch) Zahnow. He attended rural schools in Lac qui Parle County. He served in both the U.S. Army and Army Air Corps in World War II and flew 30 missions over Germany as a waist gunner in a B-24 Liberator.
He married VaLoris Putzier on June 29, 1945, in Nassau. They farmed in Arena and Garfield townships. He also worked as a custodian at the county courthouse for four years. They spent 15 years living in Mesa, Ariz., and returned to Madison in 1993. They moved to the Madison Lutheran Home in 2007.
He was a founding member of the Madison VFW Post 1656 and was granted life membership in 1996. He was also an active member of the American Legion Post 158 for more than 50 years. He attended Lutheran churches in Arena and Garfield townships, Christ Church in Phoenix and St. John's in Madison. He had served as deacon, elder, board member, usher and lay minister over the years.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter: Ardith (and Joe) Messicci; and a sister: Elnore Kostad of Willmar.
He was preceded in death by six brothers, one of them in infancy, and three sisters, two in infancy.
