WILLMAR -- Train together, win together.

It worked for Kyle Eckhoff and his fiancée, Kari Bloch.

Eckhoff won the Foot Lake 4 on a blustery Saturday morning during the Willmar Fests celebration. Bloch was the first woman to the finish line at the corner of Becker Avenue and Second Street West.

The final results showed 366 runners finished.

Eckhoff, the runner-up last year, ran at a 5:11 pace around the lake in his home town. No one stayed close. Joel Dudgeon, the Wabasso school teacher, finished two minutes back in second place.

Next came Paul Kimpling of Willmar and Austin Hinrichs of Clara City, both college athletes as is Eckhoff and Bloch.

Bloch finished 10 seconds up on 2007 women's champion Katie Reigstad, a third-year medical student from Willmar, reversing last year's finish in the women's race.

Bloch, from Svea, and Eckhoff each run for Minnesota State-Moorhead.

They put in 50 to 60 miles a week together, a training schedule that will increase to perhaps 80 miles as the Dragons' cross country season nears.

Eckhoff also won the Atwater 5k this month. The next race in the Glacial Lakes Championship Series is Sunday's 12-mile Green Lake Road Race, which has a 7 a.m. start this year.

Foot Lake 4 notes

n The race turnout from the St. Cloud area included Evan Jones, who will be 70 in September. Except for a stint in the Navy, he's run most of his life. The 1956 graduate of Thief River Falls is a retired professor of political science at St. Cloud State. Even hip replacement hasn't stopped him. He was first in his age group in 34:52.

n Kimpling, who medaled in the high hurdles at the 2006 state track meet, is running cross country and track at Minnesota-Duluth. He's competed in the pentathlon and will try the steeplechase next season when the Bulldogs leave the defunct North Central Conference for the NSIC. Hinrichs runs for Bethel College.

n In contrast to last year's sweltering morning on race day, it was a cool 60 degrees at 8 a.m. The northwest wind hit the runners on the strip of road heading toward the fairground's entrance and light rain swirled in the air.

n The race always seems to bring area graduates back to test their fitness. Jon Merickel, former Cardinal distance runner, has spent the last seven years working in Chicago in finance and plans to run the Chicago Marathon again in October. Leah (Klaassen) Brown, 32, who played basketball four years for South Dakota State, taught last year at Pequot Lakes but will take next year off to raise her two young children. Her husband, Walker Brown, ran in his first race.

n Also running his first race was Mark Miley, a wrestler in college and the principal at the junior high here. Also running were his children Alexis, 11, and Austin, 12. "We trained doing 10-minute miles," said the dad. "We got pointers from (Willmar running) coach (Jerry) Popp on Wednesday, so we were ready."

n Tom Boike, 19, a 6-foot-7 football lineman and basketball center at the college here, finished 65th overall in 28:47. In 69th place was another ex-Willmar High athlete Derrick Cruze, who did an Ironman triathlon in Idaho a week earlier.

n Tim Daniels, who works at the YMCA in maintenance, ran his first race. "I started taking spinning classes (at the Y) in January. It was amazing cross-training and what an awesome course."

n The Heart and Sole running club for kids again claimed the FL4 Team Trophy with 52 runners under the supervision of Tracy Erickson.

n Attendance was down about 100 runners from last year's record field of 463. Estimates for the number of walker/strollers were 100 to 150 in addition to the 366 timed by Pickle Events.
