Ernest Manthey May 12, 1917 - Dec. 15, 2008
WILLMAR -- Ernest August Henry Manthey, 91, of Willmar, formerly of Murdock, died Monday at Rice Care Center in Willmar.
The service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Kerkhoven.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials preferred to the American Cancer Society.
He was born May 12, 1917, in Sparta Township, rural Montevideo, to Fred and Anna (Vergin) Manthey. He grew up in Montevideo and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1936. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps where he drove bulldozer, serving until 1939.
He married Nettie Gregerson on Dec. 1, 1940, in Kerkhoven. They lived and farmed in the Kerkhoven area until 1950, when they purchased their farm in Murdock. He retired from farming in 1974 and they moved to Willmar. He worked for Steffen Implement in Raymond for several years. In 1983, he organized the Willmar CCC Chapter 142 and, in 2006, he helped purchase the commemorative Civilian Conservation Corps statue located at the Willmar Flags of Honor. He was a firearms safety instructor, a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Murdock where he served as an usher and on the church board. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar at the time of his death.
He is survived by his wife; children: Gordon Manthey of Sumner, Wash., Dianna Johnson of Montevideo, Ronald (and Donna) Manthey of Granite Falls, Donald (and Deidre) Manthey of Fountain Valley, Calif., Erlynn (and Jodie) Manthey of Stafford, Va., Arlene (and Calvin) Carls of Pennock; daughter-in-law: Pat Manthey of Crystal; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and sisters: Ruth Thayer of Florida, and Bernice Thoe of Montrose, Colo.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, two granddaughters in infancy; and his son-in-law: Dennis Johnson.
