Essler sets single-game rushing record for NLS
New London-Spicer senior Adam Essler set a Wildcats’ single-game rushing record when he rolled up 301 yards in 28 carries in the Section 6AAA championship win on Friday.
Essler scored three rushing touchdowns and also caught a pair of touchdown tosses from quarterback Ryan Vraa in the 66-46 win over Annandale at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud.
The former standard was held by Levi Schultz, who rushed for 293 yards in 33 attempts with four touchdowns vs. St. Cloud Cathedral in 2007.
Essler, a 5-foot-11, 185-pound tailback, has 4,173 all-purpose yards in a three-year career with 310 points scored. He has scored 27 rushing touchdowns this fall and a total of 198 points.
The 66 points is not a program record. The Wildcats scored 70 as recently as last year in a first-round playoff victory over Montevideo.
New London-Spicer meets Section 8AAA champion Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton — both are 8-2 — at 5 p.m. on Saturday at St. Cloud State University in the quarterfinals of the Class AAA State Tournament.
