NEW LONDON - Ethel L. Hjelle age 97, of New London died on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. Burial will be at Lebanon Cemetery in New London. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4-7:00 pm at Johnson Funeral Home in New London and continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Ethel Linnea Christine Hjelle was born on November 6, 1915, in Lake Andrew Township, the daughter of Carl and Emma (Sundquist) Bengtson. She attended District # 108 Country School and went on to graduate from New London High School in 1934. After high school she attended St. Cloud State Teachers College where she earned her teaching certificate. Ethel then taught for eleven years at Kandiyohi, Pennock, Sunburg, and Spicer Elementary Schools.

Ethel was united in marriage to Orlando Hjelle in 1944, at Lebanon Lutheran Church in New London. This union was blessed with a daughter and a son. The family made their home near Lake Florida where they farmed. Orlando passed away in 1959. They were able to share in 13 years of marriage.

After Orlando died Ethel moved to New London. She also returned to St. Cloud State University where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in teaching by taking night classes while teaching school during the day. Ethel taught for the New London-Spicer School district for 22 years before her retirement in 1981. After Ethel’s retirement she earned her CNA License and worked at GlenOaks Care Center where she also volunteered in the activities department. In 2009 Ethel moved into the GlenOaks Apartments where she lived until her death.

Ethel was a lifelong member of Lebanon/Peace Lutheran Church in New London. She was active there teaching Sunday school, vacation bible school, and bible classes. Ethel enjoyed reading, embroidery work, singing, and playing cards. She was an avid baseball fan who never missed a Twins game on TV or radio. Ethel also taught all her grandchildren the game of baseball. She was also a fan of basketball especially the Minnesota Timberwolves. Her family will remember all the love that she gave them, and the time she spent with the grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ethel L. Hjelle died on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar at the age of 97. She is survived by her children, Paul (Jane) Hjelle of New London, and Ruth (Gene) Templer of New London; grandchildren, Leah (Aaron) Barber, Tom (Heather) Templer, Tyler (Shannon) Templer, and Lindsay (Braden) Nygaard; and nine great grandchildren.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orlando; grandson, Travis Templer; five brothers; and two sisters.
