BELGRADE -- Ethel Marie Vliem, 88, of Belgrade died Tuesday at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.
The service will be at 11 a.m. today at Brooten Community Church in Brooten. Burial will be at Bethany Cemetery in Brooten.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Brooten.
She was born June 6, 1918, in Hospers, Iowa, to Nick and Mary (Boone) Brink. She grew up and attended school in Sheldon, Iowa.
She married Arthur Vliem on Jan. 2, 1942, in Brooten. She lived with her parents while Arthur served in the U.S. Army during World War II. They moved to the Brooten and Belgrade area in 1945. They farmed until the early 1980s when they retired and moved to Belgrade. She was a homemaker, worked in the sewing department at Fingerhut and worked in the restaurant business. She moved to the nursing home in Belgrade in April.
She was a member of Brooten Community Church.
She is survived by her children: Dale (and Barbara) Vliem of Tempe, Ariz., Myra (and Richard) Foner of Villard, Ronald (and Karen) Vliem of Belgrade, Donald Vliem of Sedan, Robert (and Paulette) Vliem of Oak Grove, Norris (and Kiara) Vliem of Big Lake, Nancy (and Herman) Grussing of Sedan, Janice (and Gordon) Hanson, of Fargo, N.D., Gary (and Donna) Vliem of Fargo, Arlan Vliem of Buffalo; 26 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one sister: Janet Dekok of Brooten.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2001; infant son: Darryl; and her twin brother.
