BIRD ISLAND - Ethel Scott, age 90, of Bird Island died Sunday, December 9, 2012 at Golden Living Center in Olivia. Funeral services are Friday 2:00 p.m. at Bird Island United Methodist Church in Bird Island with Rev. Byron Perrine officiating. Burial is in the Bird Island City Cemetery. Visitation is Thursday 4-7 p.m. at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Bird Island and continues Friday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Ethel Marie Scott was born August 28, 1922 in Mentor Township, Hughes County, South Dakota to Henry and Katherine (Sanwald) Kayser. She attended Mentor School and graduated from Pierre High School in 1939. She worked for the JC Penney Store in Pierre for 8 1/2 years as a stock room clerk, bookkeeper and cashier. Ethel married Donald Scott on November 10, 1950 at First Lutheran Church in Baudette, Minnesota. Donald was employed at Hamre Jewelry in Baudette and Ethel worked at Rowell Labs where they made pharmaceuticals. In 1951 they moved to Hutchinson and she worked at the JC Penney store as a sales clerk and window dresser. In May 1952 they moved to Bird Island where they opened up Scott's Jewelry and were in business until 1996.(Donald died in April 1995 and she closed the store in 1996) Ethel also worked at the Bird Island Clinic for 36 years from 1956-1992 as a receptionist. She started as the United Methodist parish secretary in 1983 for Olivia and Bird Island. Since 2010 she has been the secretary at the Bird Island United Methodist Church. Ethel was a faithful member of the Bird Island Methodist Church since 1953 where she sang in the choir and was an Administrative Board Recording Secretary from 1959 to present. She was also a member of the Bird Island American Legion and the Olivia V.F.W. Auxiliary. Ethel had enjoyed doing cross stitch, singing, and having coffee with her many friends. Ethel was a wonderful baker and not only won a recipe contest for "Taste Of Home" magazine but was selected for best recipe for their 25th Anniversary Edition. She will be truly missed as the church secretary for Ethel had a wonderful gift of coordinating the music to the message for services while preparing bulletins.
Ethel is survived by her brother, Henry Kayser of San Antonio, TX; her sister, Cathryn Ferguson of Worland, WY; her sister-in-law, Adella Kayser of Pierre, SD and numerous nieces and nephews. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Donald Scott; her brother Raymond Kayser; her niece Sharon Johnson; her brother-in-law Earl Ferguson; and her sister-in-law Clara Lou (Kitty) Kayser.
