Eugene Franklin Thompson was born on July 27, 1926 in North Fork Township near Brooten, MN to Andrew and Tina (Fauskee) Thompson. He was the youngest of four children and grew up on the family farm in North Fork Township.

Eugene attended school at the local country schoolhouse, District #66, and attended Big Grove Lutheran Church where he was confirmed in October 1940. After graduating from Brooten High School in 1944, he attended the University of Minnesota for a year to study agriculture. He then returned to work on the family farm with his father.

On October 14, 1951, Eugene married Merle Odella Heieie at Big Grove and the couple settled on the farm of Eugene’s parents where they welcomed four boys: Mark, Paul, Dean and Dale. Merle passed away in December 1970 and Eugene remained on the family farm until he retired in the mid-1990’s when his youngest son, Dale, took over farming responsibilities.

For 13 years, Eugene lived in Brooten before finally moving to Glenwood in 2011. Over the years, Eugene enjoyed many adventures. Always proud of his Norwegian heritage, he was a longtime member of both the Hallinglag and Valdres Samband clubs. He was able to travel to Norway on three separate occasions; once with his son, Dean, and another time with his sons, Mark and Paul and grandson, Trenton.

Eugene took pride in his family and enjoyed attending the performances of his grandchildren, both in athletics and the arts. He enjoyed collecting antiques and artifacts ranging from the unique stones he found in the farm fields to photographs and plat maps. His extensive knowledge of local history and ability to identify people and places in obscure pictures and the stories that accompanied them will be greatly missed.

Eugene is survived by his children, Mark (Mary) of Edina, MN; Paul (Mary) of Rosemount, MN; Dean of Mesa, AZ; and Dale (Trisha) of Brooten, MN, as well as his grandchildren, Megan, Michael, Trenton, Benjamin and Joseph. He is also survived by his sister, Adeline Midthun of Thief River Falls, MN, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Merle (Heieie) Thompson, his grandson, Matthew Thompson, his parents, Andrew and Tina (Fauskee) Thompson and his brothers, Kenneth and Ralph Thompson.
