WILLMAR -- The senior ambassador coronation kicked off Wednesday's 2013 Willmar Fests events.

The ceremony, held at the Willmar Community Center, featured a Dr. Seuss theme, focused around the book "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" The Senior Citizens Club choir, dressed in tall, red and white striped hats like "The Cat in the Hat," sang a collection of classic songs that went with the theme of the event.

Twenty-two of the past senior ambassadors were recognized, as were the reigning Willmar Fests princesses and the 2013 royalty candidates. After thanking everyone for a great year, 2012 senior ambassadors Myron and Elaine Frank passed on their sash and crowns to Don and Donna Evenson, who will now represent Willmar as the 2013 Willmar Fests Senior Ambassadors.

After the coronation committee puts together a list of candidates, the Senior Citizens Club votes for its ambassadors. Also on the ballot this year were Brenda Talbot and Marvin Kinzler.

Elaine Frank said the Evensons won because of everything they do for the Senior Citizens Club.

"They're wonderful people," Frank said. "They work so hard and do a lot of good things here at the club."

Donna Evenson said she was excited when she found out she and Don were the new senior ambassadors.

"I've heard it's so much fun, so I'm looking forward to the next year," Evenson said. "This is a very new experience for us. I'm looking forward to all the parades in the different towns."

Willmar Fests events continue today through Saturday. See the schedule on Page A3 for more.
