Excessive heat warning in effect for west central Minn.
West central Minnesota will remain in an excessive heat warning through midnight tonight, according to the National Weather Service.
In the Willmar area, high temperatures today will be around 93 degrees, with heat indices ranging from 100 to 107 this afternoon. These dangerous heat indices are a result of hot temperatures and high humidity values.
In addition, nighttime low temperatures have not cooled below the mid 70s to lower 80s.
Slight relief from the oppressively hot conditions will arrive Wednesday, according to the Weather Service, although temperatures will still range from the upper 80s to lower 90s.
Heat indices will range from 90 to 100 degrees Wednesday through Friday. Thunderstorms may also be possible later in the week.
Hot and humid conditions lead to a higher risk of heat-related stress and illness, especially for the young and elderly, those without air conditioning and people participating in strenuous outdoor activities.
In this heat, the Weather Service recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned rooms, staying out of the sun and checking on relatives and neighbors.
