Facebook-nabbed robber pleads to charge from Dino Mart incident in Willmar, Minn.
WILLMAR -- Abass Warsame Mumin, 22, of Willmar, pleaded guilty Monday to a felony charge of attempted simple robbery for his role in assaulting and robbing the clerk of Trav's Dino Mart on Jan. 25.
Mumin will be sentenced May 31 in Kandiyohi County District Court. He and Mahad Muhidin Tahlil, 20, of Willmar, were identified as the perpetrators of the Dino Mart robbery and another theft in the downtown Willmar area after Willmar police posted video surveillance images of the men on the department's Facebook page.
An arrest warrant was issued March 27 after Tahlil failed to appear for a court hearing.
According to the complaints, police officers were called to the gas station, along First Street South, where a cashier reported that three men had entered the station and that one had grabbed her by the neck and pushed her. The man also grabbed the drawer of the cash register, causing it to fall the floor. The cashier reported that the men smelled of alcohol and that her cell phone was also missing. The third man is mentioned, but not identified in the court documents.
Security video showed the assault and the theft of the phone. During the same time period as the investigation into the robbery, police also took reports from other local businesses that three Somali men were entering businesses and being disruptive.
Using the security video images, employees of the other businesses identified the men as the same people who attempted to buy jewelry at Riddle's Jewelry on Feb. 6 and who stole jewelry from Korthuis Jewelry on Feb. 8. One of the men gave Tahlil's identification at Riddle's and a witness identified both men as those involved in the Korthuis theft.
