Renville County corn, soybean field day is Wednesday

BIRD ISLAND -- The Renville County Corn and Soybean Growers will host a corn and soybean variety field day at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Doug Toreen farm near Bird Island. The field is located on Renville County Road 4, a half-mile west of Renville County Road 3 or 6 miles south of Bird Island to County Road 4, then 3.5 miles east.

The field day is free to farmers and ag professionals. Seed company representatives representing 20 corn varieties and 18 soybean varieties planted in the plot have been invited. The plot tour also includes a soybean cyst nematode study with comments by Dave Nicolai, regional extension educator for crops.

The program will be followed by a meal of pork chop sandwiches prepared by the Renville County Pork Producers. An educational update will feature Dr. Jeff Strock, soil scientist at the Southwest Research and Outreach Center, Lamberton; discussing nitrogen, sulfur and residue management in corn for the 2010 crop.

Livestock labor conference is Sept. 22

MANKATO -- The fourth annual Workforce Development Conference is planned from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Country Inn & Suites, Mankato. Conference speakers will provide suggestions for creating a positive livestock facility environment that encourages farm productivity, improves employee job satisfaction, and enhances the pork industry's reputation.

Sponsored by the Minnesota Pork Board and the Pork Check-off, Workforce Development Conference seminars will demonstrate and address how family member, employer or manager behavioral expectations, business values and policies influence worker attitudes, workplace conduct and overall barn dynamics.

Although conference seminars are geared toward pork producers, the presentations will provide beneficial information for anyone involved in livestock production and agriculture.

Conference registration opens at 8:30 a.m. and seminars are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Registration in advance for this conference is encouraged, although at-the-door registration will be accepted if space is available. The registration fee is $30 per person if paid by Sept. 15. Registration at the door will be $50. Registration includes materials, lunch and refreshments.

Conference speakers are nationally recognized business experts and work force motivators who understand the unique challenges facing those with livestock production and agricultural careers.

Dairy council seeks candidates

ST. PAUL -- The Minnesota Dairy Research and Promotion Council seeks candidates to run for board positions in 11 statewide districts. Candidates will represent dairy farmers in their district, and make decisions regarding the expenditure of dairy check-off funds. Candidates should be active dairy farmers who are well-informed members of their community and interested in check-off promotion programs.

Interested candidates should contact their local nomination chair by Oct. 15.

The District 11 nomination chairs are Larry and Jean Urban, who can be reached at 320-354-5291. District 11 includes Kandiyohi, Swift, Yellow Medicine, Renville, Lac qui Parle, Big Stone and Chippewa counties.

The District 9 chair is Corrine Hadrich, who can be reached at 320-746-2381. District 9 includes many Stearns County townships.

Deadline for this request must be made to the Department of Agriculture by Dec. 3. Election ballots will be mailed in January for the two-year terms.
