Fast start lifts MCC past MACCRAY in Section 3A
MARSHALL -- MACCRAY's bid in Section 3A baseball ended Tuesday evening at Legion Park with a 4-3 loss to Murray County Central.
The Wolverines left the tying run at third base and the winning run at second in the sixth.
The Wolverines, who were state champions in 2009, finish the season 11-9.
MCC scored three times in the bottom of the first, coupling three singles and two walks off Wolverine starter Riley Aeikens.
Aeikins allowed just two hits, a run and one walk over the next five innings.
MACCRAY scored one in the first on a two-out single by Seth Hinrichs to plate Jamie Boonstra. In the second, again with two outs, Boonstra's clutch double chased Alex Wrede to the plate. Wrede had reached on a long double.
That made it 3-2, but MCC would get the decisive run in the third. A one-out walk to Trent Carlson, who then stole second, was followed by a run-scoring single by Josh Onken for a 4-2 lead.
MACCRAY made it 4-3 in the sixth when Corey Abbas singled in Aeikens, who had walked. But the rally stalled with two runners in scoring position.
The Wolverines outhit MCC 8-5, but Sam Erickson, the Rebels' starting pitcher, walked just one and eight strikeouts got him out of tight spots.
MCC must beat Tracy-Milroy-Balaton twice on Thursday at Richter Field in Granite Falls to advance to the state tournament.
