FDNY fireman to speak at Ridgewater College, talk about 9/11 experiences
WILLMAR -- Retired New York City Fire Department Lt. Steve Kanarian will speak tonight and Wednesday at Ridgewater College in Willmar about his experiences from Sept. 11, 2001.
Kanarian is now a fire and emergency service educator and author. He will speak from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the campus cafeteria on the Willmar campus.
Sessions with Kanarian are also scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Ridgewater campus in Hutchinson and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Alexandria Tech campus.
The former FDNY firefighter will take attendees on a behind-the-scenes walk into harm's way by sharing his experiences from 9/11 from fire/emergency services/urban search and rescue perspectives. Participants can learn about the obstacles emergency responders faced and strategies they used to stay safe, along with how to raise awareness of responders to mass casualty incidents. The event will also showcase the courage and dedication of first responders and the challenges they faced.
