Fergus Falls sinks Willmar
FERGUS FALLS -- Willmar had a short-lived lead, then Fergus Falls took it away with a big inning to hand the Cardinals a 9-5 loss in Central Lakes Conference baseball action Thursday.
Willmar (6-2, 7-4) scored two runs in the top of the first on an Alec Saunders sacrifice fly and John Sawatzky's single and held a 3-1 lead after the top of the second.
The Otters (2-6, 3-6) came back with six runs in the bottom half on six hits. Devin Baker highlighted the rally with a two-run double.
Jordan Smith hit the second of his two doubles in the fourth to drive in Willmar's fifth run, the last of the game for the Cardinals. He went 3-for-3 and also scored two runs. Logan Birkland had the only other hit for Willmar.
Matt Hanson, Matt Mithaugen and Kyle Shaikowski had two hits each for Fergus Falls, which touched Willmar starting pitcher Nathaniel Swoyer for 11 hits in 5Xc innings.
Swoyer took the loss. He struck out six and walked two. Scott Skaalerud pitched one out in the sixth.
Spencer Kidder got the win in relief of Fergus Falls starter Joe Anderson. Kidder pitched four innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits. He struck out five and walked three.
