WILLMAR -- The end of the regular season couldn't come to soon for the Willmar boys basketball team.

The Cardinals finished on a bad note, losing three of their last four games, including Friday's 84-81 loss to Fergus Falls in the Central Lakes Conference finale.

Willmar finished third in the league (12-6, 16-10), but will have to find a way to hold onto second-half leads when the post-season starts Tuesday. The Cardinals will host Hutchinson in a Section 2AAA quarterfinal game at 7 p.m.

Willmar held a 42-39 lead and had a seven-point lead with about eight minutes left in the game Friday, but Fergus Falls picked its way back into the lead and dodged an overtime bullet when a last-second Cardinal three-pointer didn't hit the mark.

"We haven't been able to consistently put people away," said Willmar coach Steve Grove.

Fergus Falls ended its five-game losing streak.

The Otters also ended a nine-game skid to the Cardinals, dating back to a 56-53 win over Willmar March 18, 2004 in the Section 8AAA championship game.

Jordan Smith and Taylor Filipek scored 18 points each to lead Willmar. Brian Reeves followed with 17 points and Isaiah Streed had 13. Smith grabbed seven rebounds.

Grant Torgerson and Derek Hanson scored 26 points each to lead the Otters (7-11, 9-15).
