Fern was born on October 9, 1928, in Lake Andrew Township, Kandiyohi County, Minnesota, the daughter of Oscar and Minnie (Norstedt) Tollefson. She grew up near New London, attending country school #7 and #8. Following her schooling, Fern worked in various homes in the area, eventually working with her cousin, Alma Tollefson, at Sims Caf in New London, living above the caf. After moving to Willmar, Fern first worked at Ottos Caf for about three years before being one of the first eight people hired at Farmers Produce, (Jennie - O) which opened its doors in 1949. For extra money, Fern worked at Willmar Theater, selling tickets and this is where she met her husband to be, Marlowe "Pete" Peterson, who also worked there running the movie projector. On December 21, 1950, they were united in marriage in Watertown, South Dakota.

Following their marriage, they lived in Willmar for a short time before moving to Marlowe's home in Maynard. Fern and Pete returned to Willmar and moved into their home across from Garfield School. For several years, Fern worked at Garfield School before returning to Jennie O.

Fern enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting and especially enjoyed "dining with her lady friends." Most of all, Fern cherished all the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren.

Surviving are her sons, Manford (and Sharon) Peterson of Litchfield; Alan (and Connie) Peterson of Remsen, IA; Mark (and Sophia) Peterson of Willmar; eight grandchildren, Michael, Joshua, Samantha, Kara, Christine, Stephen, Alex and Anthony. Also surviving are her siblings, Reynold (and Leota) Tollefson of Belgrade; Donald Tollefson of New London and Joann Alseth of Bullhead City, AZ; and sister-in-law, Luverne Tollefson of Sauk Rapids.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Marlowe, on October 27, 1998; brothers, Willard and Oliver and sisters, Gervaise and Jane Ness.
