WILLMAR — Willmar Fire Department crews were called early this morning to the 1200 block of Willmar Avenue Southeast to battle a house fire.

Fire crews remained on the scene until around 8:30 a.m. The department will release more information about the blaze this afternoon, according to Battalion Chief Jim Larson.

The fire was first noticed and reported to authorities by a passerby just after 7 a.m., according to Jerry Gesch, who is a neighbor to the residence. Gesch said the home was occupied by a woman in her 80s who had lived there for many years.

He watched the firefighters remove the woman from the home. The fire department has not released any information about the woman’s condition.

Further information is expected to be released later this afternoon.

Traffic was diverted around the scene for a time as emergency crews responded.
