Fire near Litchfield destroys shed, bales, machinery
LITCHFIELD -- A shed, cornstalk bales and several pieces of haying machinery were damaged or destroy by fire around 10 a.m. Wednesday at a rural Litchfield residence.
According to the Meeker County Sheriff's Office, deputies and fire crews were called to a fire in a shed at 16235 County State Aid Highway 1, which is southwest of Litchfield.
The homeowner, Harold Johnson, had noticed smoke coming from the shed and called 911. Attempts were made to break up the fire by moving the burning bales and the equipment from the shed.
Both Litchfield and Cosmos fire departments were called to the fire. The shed was a complete loss estimated at $80,000. Some items inside the shed that were also damaged were a New Holland round baler, discbine and a forage blower.
