First-inning explosion carries Alexandria past Stingers, 6-5
ALEXANDRIA -- Alexandria scored four times in the first inning and then held off the Willmar Stingers 6-5 in a Northwoods League baseball game on Friday.
It was only Willmar's second road game of the season and the first of a four-game road trip.
Willmar (4-5) dropped two games behind the front-running Mankato Moondogs (6-3) in the North Division. Alexandria is now 4-6.
The Stingers managed only six hits against three Beetles pitchers. Jordan Smith slapped a single and a double in five trips, while alaso knocking in a run. Carlos Levya, Joe Sever, Sean Dwyer and Matt Serna had the other hits for Willmar. Dwyer rapped a double.
Will Miller hit a solo homer for the Beetles off losing pitcher Charley Olson, who scattered eight hits in five innings and gave up six runs. He walked three and struck out six. Jacob Barnes relieved and tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out three. Jayson Huett pitched a hitless inning of relief.
Willmar travels to Duluth today for a three-game series before having its first off day on Tuesday. The Stingers' next home game is Wednesday against Rochester.
