Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Department officers had de-toured traffic between Spicer and the Highway 71/23 intersection north of Willmar due to a tipped semi truck carrying ammonia nitrate and and other explosive materials.

The mishap occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. According to a Sheriff's Department news release, the truck had a flat tire which caused it to go into the ditch and roll over. The driver is not believed to be seriously injured.

The truck was pulled from the ditch at approximately 7:30 p.m., and the detour lifted shortly afterward.

The cleanup was at the intersection of state Highway 23 and Kandiyohi County Road 9 near Eagle Lake. Cleanup of spilled fertilizer in the ditch continued after the truck removal. Crews will continue with cleanup work at the site; however, traffic will not be impacted.

Residents who live in the area were evacuated from their homes. A news release from the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's office stated those residents had been notified by law enforcement that it was safe for them to return to their homes.

Responding to the scene were the Willmar Fire Department, Spicer Fire Department, Willmar Heat Team and the Kandiyohi County Rescue Squad. Also called to the scene was St. Cloud Chemical Assessment.
