Florence Spaanem March 19, 1915 - Aug. 29, 2013

KERKHOVEN - Florence Spaanem, of Kerkhoven, died Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar. Funeral will be at 10:30 am, Wednesday, September 4th at Sunburg Free Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Sunburg Free Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7:00 pm, at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Kerkhoven and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Florence Evelyn Spaanem was born March 19, 1915 in Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of John and Dena (Clauson) Skarpness. She attended country school District #63 and as a young girl, helped several ladies as a hired girl doing housework, baking and canning. She was confirmed on November 17, 1929.

On June 5, 1939, she was united in marriage to Thurber Spaanem at the Spring Creek parsonage and to this union a daughter Jean and a son Turb were born. She enjoyed being a housewife and mom. She also had a large garden from which she canned many vegetables.

She was active in the Sunburg Free Lutheran Church and was a Sunday school superintendent for many years. She also attended Ladies Aid. She was a 4-H leader and worked at Jennie-O for 25 years.

They made their home on a farm in near Sunburg until 1962 when they moved to a farm near Kerkhoven. After Thurber passed away in 1970 she remained on the farm until 1977 when she moved to her apartment in Kerkhoven.

She moved to Bethesda Heritage Center on August 22, 2011. She loved the time she had at the nursing home and formed many friends there. She was an early riser and always spent time reading scripture and praying every day. She loved the Lord.

She loved music and played piano, organ and accordion. She spent many hours with the crochet hook in her hand and her family each have several lovely doilies and afghans that she made for them. They all remember her great baking. Florence went home to be with her Lord on Thursday evening Aug. 29, 2013.

Surviving are her children: Jean (Ralph) Halverson of Kerkhoven; Turb (Mary) Spaanem of Osseo; six grandchildren: Kari (Brad) Hanson, Susan (Ed) Anderson, Beth (Jon) Johnson, T.J. (Kristy) Spaanem, Sarah (Matt) Foehrenbacher and Andrew (Danielle) Spaanem; 5 great-grandchildren: Brittany and Mikayla Anderson, Luke and Aaron Hanson, Jonathan Spaanem and one great-great-grandson Parker Peterson.

She loved and cherished the time she could spend with her children, grandchildren and family.

She is also survived by her two sisters: Doris Knutson of Brooten and Mildred Wendt of Glenwood and many extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Thurber.
