Former Benson superintendent is arraigned on criminal sexual conduct charge with student
Carl E. Remmers, 65, of Cass Lake, the superintendent of the Cass Lake-Bena School District, was arraigned in Beltrami County District Court Tuesday for one count of criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree, which is a serious felony.
Beltrami County District Judge Paul T. Benshoof set bail at $5,000, with a 20 percent cash alternative. Conditions of that bail would include not leaving the state of Minnesota and making all future court appearances, not having contact with the victim or any minors and remaining law abiding.
Remmers served as superintendent of Benson Public Schools, working in that district from June 2000 until June 2006. He had previously worked as superintendent in South Dakota schools in the towns of Canton, Newell, Timber Lake and Harold. He also worked as teacher, coach and principal at Polo, S.D.
Remmers is no longer listed as an inmate at Beltrami County Jail.
If convicted, Remmers could face up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
According to the criminal complaint, a 17-year-old boy said he had been inappropriately touched by Remmers while he was in Remmers' office in the Alternative Learning Center in Cass Lake.
Remmers' next court appearance is set for 9 a.m. Aug. 9.
