Former Cosmos resident pleads guilty to one count for knifepoint robbery in rural Willmar
WILLMAR -- Devin Delbert Donald Blom, 21, of St. Cloud and formerly of Cosmos, pleaded guilty Thursday to first-degree burglary charge for the July 8 robbery of a man at his rural Willmar home.
As part of a plea agreement reached in Kandiyohi County District Court, five other felony charges for burglary, theft and aggravated robbery and assault, plus a misdemeanor charge for damage to property, will be dismissed. Blom agreed to pay restitution, which totals $20,000 including $11,000 of coins and silver and more than $8,000 in medical costs, and will receive a "bottom of the box" sentence, referring to the grid system used in state sentencing guidelines. He will be sentenced Dec. 18.
Blom is also facing felony charges in Meeker County for drug sale and possession and fleeing a peace officer in a vehicle. He is the man law enforcement officers searched for in a cornfield in late August west of Grove City. His next appearance on those charges is Oct. 24.
The charges were filed after a man called law enforcement around 7:30 a.m. July 8 and said that he had just been robbed at his home along U.S. Highway 71 south of Willmar.
The man said he had heard tapping on a window pane around 6:30 a.m., but fell back to sleep. He woke up about 30 minutes later to find someone crouching in the hallway just outside of his bedroom door. The person jumped him and pulled a blanket over his head. The man said the person demanded money, jewelry, guns and shells.
The man and the burglar fought and the burglar found a knife in a drawer and held it to the man's throat, demanding that he open a safe where coins and books were stored. The man complied and the burglar took about $11,500 worth of coins.
Officers found that entry to the home was gained through a kitchen window and were able to lift fingerprints from the window frame. The prints were matched by the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to Blom. The homeowner also identified Blom in a photo lineup.
