Four more sign with Stingers
WILLMAR -- The Willmar Stingers of the Northwoods League announced the signing of four more players Sunday for their inaugural season.
Signing contracts recently were Anthony Bemboom, Sean Dwyer, Daniel Zapata and Cody Barnes.
Bemboom is a Sauk Rapids native who currently plays for Iowa Western Community College. He has signed a letter of intent to play for Creighton University next fall. The sophomore catcher/outfielder batted .408 with 45 RBI this season for Iowa Western.
Dwyer will be a freshman at Florida Gulf Coast University next fall. The switch-hitting outfielder is currently at Tavares High School in Florida where he is batting .367 with three home runs. He was named to the 2010 Perfect Game All-Central Florida team.
Zapata, a right-handed sophomore pitcher at Scottsdale Community College (Ariz.), will transfer to Dixie State College (Utah) next year. He posted a 2-5 record with two saves and had 38 strikeouts in 32 innings this season.
Barnes, also a right-handed pitcher, is a sophomore at Daytona State College in Florida. He will be transferring to Florida Atlantic University next fall. This season, he pitched 61 innings and had 50 strikeouts while compiling a 3-5 record.
The Stingers open the season June 3 at home against the St. Cloud River Bats at Bill Taunton Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
