Freiborg new volleyball coach at MACCRAY
Former Renville County West standout Aimee Freiborg has been named the new volleyball coach at MACCRAY, it was announced recently.
Freiborg was a 6-foot-1 middle hitter on the RCW team that captured the 2002 Class A state title. She was an All-Area second team selection in both her junior and senior seasons. She led the Jaguars in kills both years, including 302 as a senior, and finished her career with 733. She also had 53 ace blocks and 46 ace serves her senior year.
Freiborg also played two years at Bethany Lutheran in Mankato and was a starter on the 2004 national Division III collegiate tournament volleyball team that placed third and was named to the All-Region team that year.
Freiborg has been a health/physical education instructor the last two years at a middle school in Sanford, N.C. She also coached the middle school volleyball and basketball team.
She will take over for Terese Bourne, who coached for 10 seasons and guided the Wolverines to two state tournament appearances and a 144-96 overall record during that span. Bourne and her husband, Nathan, are expecting twins this month.
"I heard about the opening for a volleyball coach and applied right away," said Freiborg. "I wanted to come back home and I wanted to coach."
Freiborg has four days left of school in Sanford and then plans to return home.
"I'm really excited about getting a chance to work with the girls and return to Minnesota," she said. "I'm still looking for a teaching job somewhere so hopefully that will come along, too."
MACCRAY went 15-11 last season.
