Former Kanabec County Sheriff Von Thompson has turned himself into authorities after spending about a week as a fugitive.

Thompson was charged in October with four felonies for allegedly swindling a 91-year-old man out of $179,000.

Current Sheriff Steve Schulz says Thompson called investigators around 7 a.m. Tuesday to say he was willing to surrender. Investigators met him 20 minutes later and arrested him.

Thompson was initially judged a low flight risk, but Mora police say he violated the terms of his release by trying to persuade people to invest money with him.

Police tried to arrest Thompson on Nov. 26, but they were unable to find him. The arrest warrant was issued last week.

Thompson was Kanabec County sheriff from 1983 to 1999. Thompson remained in jail Tuesday.
