G. Bernard Johnson March 15, 1919 - Dec. 4, 2008
WILLMAR -- G. Bernard "Barney" Johnson, 89, of Willmar, died Dec. 4 at Rice Memorial Hospital.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church Chapel. Burial will be at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials to the Bethesda Homes are preferred. Arrangements are with Peterson Brothers Funeral Home.
He was born March 15, 1919, on the family farm near Svea to Carl and Alma (Nelson) Johnson. He grew up and attended school in Svea. As a teenager, he worked and lived on different farms in the area and was later employed by All State Hatchery.
He married Doris I. Peterson on May 29, 1940. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the 103rd Infantry "Cactus" Division and later in the 45th Infantry "Thunderbird" Division. He was discharged in 1945 and returned to the area and worked at All State Hatchery until the early 1960s when he joined the Silver Lake Hatchery, retiring in 1981. He was active in his church, the American Legion and the Knuckleheads square dancing club. In retirement, they lived for 11 years full time in their RV.
He is survived by two sons: Stephen (and Sally) Johnson of Grand Rapids and Michael (and Patricia) Johnson of Spicer; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in December 2007, one brother and three sisters.
