WILLMAR — Maybe the ache of an overtime loss to Alexandria is tempered by the 64-62 final on Tuesdaylooks a lot more competitive than Willmar’s 73-42 loss on Jan. 9 at Alexandria.

Willmar outscored the visitors 37-27 in the second half to tie the game 55-all. It took free throws by Kalley Fosso with the second-half clock at 00:00 to put the game into an extra session.

Willmar took a quick two-point lead but was unable to contain Brooke Heggie, Alexandria’s 6-foot-2 junior center. She scored 7 of her team’s 9 points in overtime, including the game-winner while well-defended from six feet switching to her opposite (left) hand.

Willmar head coach Dustin Carlson said he thought his team was ready but looked sluggish falling back 28-18 by halftime. But they punched in for the second half.

“We played some great defense and executed on offense,” said Carlson.

Willmar got up by four with about three minutes left, but Alexandria fought back to go ahead 55-53 with 20 seconds left.

Fosso was fouled grabbing her own rebound as the clock ran out. Wendy Kohler, the Alex coach, tried to freeze the Willmar senior but it didn’t work.

Fosso finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Courtney Magnuson supplied 18 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Jordan Martins added 9 points and Kaitlynn Keinholz 8.

Heggie finished with 21 points and Kendall Kohler, a 5-5 freshman guard, 14 points.
