MOORHEAD — Moorhead’s Kelli Tonn hit 5 first-half 3-pointers to put Willmar into a hole from which it couldn’t dig out and the Spuds downed the Cardinals 67-54 on Saturday in a non-conference game.

Thanks to Tonn’s marksmanship, the Spuds took a 14-point lead into the half. The Cardinals were able to cut the lead to seven points in the second half but Moorhead answered.

“It was a game of runs,” said Willmar head coach Dustin Carlson. “Once we cut the lead to seven they started hitting a bunch of shots off of our turnovers. That was the biggest reason for the outcome: our turnovers turning into their points.”

Courtney Magnuson led the Cardinals with 17 points and 8 rebounds, and Jordan Martins finished with 10 points and 5 boards. Leah Ruter and Kaitlynn Kienholz both scored 9 points.

It was the Spuds’ fourth straight win while Willmar, which shot just 26 percent from the field, dropped its second straight to fall to 9-9. The Cardinals host Class AAA No. 9-ranked Alexandria on Tuesday.
