Girls Basketball: Defense lifts ACGC past BBE, 50-36

BROOTEN -- A stifling Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City defense shut down Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 50-36 Monday in non-conference girls basketball action.

The Falcons (9-5) forced the Jaguars (10-5) to shoot 27 percent (12 of 45) from the field and just 10 percent (2 of 20) from three-point range.

ACGC also dominated the boards with a 38-25 advantage.

Liberty Slinden led a balanced attack for the Falcons with a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds. Miranda Hopp followed with 11 points and eight boards, and Kayla Dallmann added 10 points.

Heidi Lensing tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Jaguars.

The Jaguars made 7 of 8 free throws in the last four minutes to hold off previously unbeaten Cedar Mountain/Comfrey.

CMC, rated No. 8 in Class A, fell to 15-1 while Renville County West goes to 7-8 with another tough game against Canby tonight.

Amanda Schultz led RCW with 11 points followed by Holly Huisman with 10.

The Jaguars were badly outrebounded but made up for it with 14 steals, four by Schultz and three by Megan Erickson, who also got seven points.

Kayla Mathiowetz led CMC with eight points and 14 rebounds.
