Girls basketball: Monte upends Redwood

BIRD ISLAND — A flagrant foul led to a four-point possession for Montevideo late in the game and the Thunder Hawks hit 10 straight free throws down the stretch in a 53-44 victory over Redwood Valley in the Section 3AA North Sub-Section semifinals on Tuesday.
Redwood Valley led by as many as nine points in the second half and still maintained a 42-39 edge with 1:39 left in the game when a Cardinals player was called for a flagrant foul, giving Monte two free throws and the ball out of bounds.
Morgan Reidinger hit the two foul shots and Ashley Hoehne scored a layup on the inbounds play to put Montevideo ahead 43-42.
The Thunder Hawks’ Tia Diggins hit all six of her free throws in the last 48 seconds and Hoehne also hit a pair of foul shots with 16 seconds left to ice the game.
Hoehne finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds and Diggins had 16 points and 11 boards.
