Girls Basketball: Morris/CA, ACGC keep slim hopes alive in WC South race

MORRIS -- Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta stayed in second place in the West Central South Conference girls basketball race with a 59-48 win over Yellow Medicine East Thursday.

The Tigers (10-3, 16-4) are two games behind Minnewaska Area (12-1, 15-3) with three league games left, including a showdown with the Lakers on Feb. 24. Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City, which routed BOLD, is also two games back.

After Morris/CA held a slim 24-23 halftime lead, the Tigers went on an 11-0 run to start the second half, then pressed the Sting (7-4, 8-8) to keep the lead.

Stef Strobel led the way for the Tigers with 14 points. Nicole Gillespie added 13 points and Mary Rentz had 12.

Aimee Johnson scored 14 points to pace YME. Macy McKay added 11 points and nine rebounds, and Jamie Baker tossed in 11 points.

Liberty Slinden led four players in double figures with 19 points and the Falcons (9-3, 11-9) shot 58 percent from the field.

Andrea Rheingans made 11-of-13 shots from the field and 4-of-5 from the free-throw line, and finished with 26 points to lead the Eagles (8-6, 12-7). She added seven steals and six rebounds.

Micaela Erickson added 16 points and seven boards, and Whitley Strei had 15 points, including both LQPV three-pointers.

Heather Rondeau scored 18 points for the Bulldogs (1-12, 2-14). Jessica Solum followed with 10 rebounds and eight points, and Andrea Schlagen also pulled down 10 boards.

The Braves unofficially shot 77.78 percent from the field (21 of 27), which would be a state record for a girls basketball team in a game, but the minimum number of attempts is 30.

Abby Fragodt posted a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Braves (6-7, 11-9). She also dished out seven assists. Sarah Ahrndt added 12 points.

Beka Schwendemann scored 15 points and Shelby Monahan added 13 for the Thunder Hawks (4-9, 4-14).
