Willmar led the Central Lakes contest 24-23 at halftime and fell behind momentarily 25-24 early in the final 18 minutes.

But Courtney Magnuson banged a 3-pointer off the glass — the team’s only trey in 11 tries — and Willmar regained the lead 27-25. The visitors quickly built the lead to 10 and then 17 points at 49-32.

Magnuson, a junior guard, finished with 19 points on her 17th birthday. Kalley Fosso was good for 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore center Lexi Orlowski hit  4 of 8 from the field for 8 points. Ten Cardinals scored.

Each team had a long run in the first half. Willmar’s 16-0 burst early put the visitors in control 18-5. Just as quickly, Brainerd answered with a 13-2 run and at half it was Willmar up by one, 24-23.

Magnuson was a big part of the Cards’ run scoring 10 points, but she was on the bench with three fouls as the Warriors roared back to get within one at the break.

The 59 points is the second best this season.

“It was good to see the scoring,” said Carlson of the 35-point second half. “There was some nice passing.”

Willmar has won four of its last five. Tip-off time  is 4:30 p.m. today in Willmar, a section game with seeding implications.

Brainerd shot just 27 percent (16 of 60) and fell to 3-7 CLC, 4-12 overall.
