Girls basketball roundup: Wildcats edge Chargers

NEW LONDON — New London-Spicer and Dassel-Cokato played another close one on Tuesday early in the Wright County Conference schedule.

The final margin of six points, 61-55 in the Cats’ favor, is greater than either meeting last year when New London-Spicer won by one point at home and four at the high school halfway between Dassel and Cokato.

The Chargers made two more field goals than the host team but the Wildcats made 17 of 24 at the free-throw line.

Taylor Thunstedt made  8-of-8 at the line and finished with 24 points.

Ashlyn Geister added 12 points and Olivia Setterberg 10.

Andi Gayner led the Chargers with 19 points.

Both teams are just three games into their 14 stop league schedule.

The Dragons trailed by as much as 26 in the first half before piecing together a 14-0 run that started late in the first half and spilled over into the start of the second half. The closest Litchfield got to the Panthers’ lead in the second half was 55-48.

Maddie Monahan netted a game-high 20 points for GSL (1-3, 8-5), while Litchfield was paced by Mariah Hoff’s 14 points. Tasha Stubeda followed with 13, Hannah Norlin 12 and Macy Huhner 11. Norlin also pulled down 12 rebounds to collect a double-double.

The Eagles led 15-0 before the Lakers got a couple of free throws from freshman Sadie Stelter at the 10:28 mark. Stelter finished with a game-high 24 points.

Lakeview got as close as 5 in the second half before Lac qui Parle Valley pulled away by going 9-for-10 at the free throw line. Kelsea Lund and Kaitlin Connor had 15 points apiece and Alaysia Freetly followed with 11 to pace the Eagles (8-1, 8-3).

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton’s 8-0 run midway through the second half put them up by 12 and while KMS would cut the lead to four the Saints couldn’t get all the way back in a Camden Conference game Tuesday in Kerkhoven.

The Bluejays led early before the unbeaten Vikings fought back to improve to 13-0 overall. Foul trouble early in the second half hindered the Bluejays’ shot at the upset as Minneota was 20-for-33 at the free throw line.

Taylor Reiss had 28 points and 11 rebounds to ignite Minneota, the top-ranked team in Class A.

Abby Zwart had 14 points and 6 rebounds to pace the Bluejays (4-5, 7-5). Dani Wubben added 9 points and 7 rebounds and Lexi Scott 10 rebounds and 4 steals.

YME’s Hailey Enstad hit all three of the Sting’s 3-point shots and finished with 13 points.

Benson’s Taylor Laumeyer had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists, and Krista Motzko finished with 9 points and 4 boards.
