Girls basketball roundup: Wildcats win opener over Monte

NEW LONDON — Taylor Thunstedt, already the school’s all-time top scorer, inched closer to 2,000 career points after netting a game-high 18 points for New London-Spicer Tuesday in the Wildcats’ 64-35 season-opening win over Montevideo.

Thunstedt, still recovering from a broken kneecap over the summer, now has 1,987 career points. The senior guard can reach the 2,000-point plateau Friday when NLS plays at Eden Valley-Watkins, usually the Wildcats’ opponent to open the season.

NLS had 16 other players see action and half of them scored. Following Thunstedt in the scoring column were Megan Thorson with 11 and Olivia Setterberg 8.

Thunstedt also supplied 8 assists and 5 steals, while Thorson hooked 6 rebounds, Ashlyn Geister blocked 3 shots and Reiley Ness pocketed 3 steals. Petra Lothert added a couple of three-pointers and 4 assists.

Morgan Reidinger and Ashley Hoehne both scored 11 points for Montevideo, which was without junior center Natalie Feldhake, who is still recovering from a torn ACL sustained in the volleyball season.

The Tigers opened their season winning handily on to road in Wheaton on Tuesday.

Beth Holland led the Tigers with 22 points, and Lauren Reimers had 12 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 8 steals.

Abbie Olson also scored 12 points and Becca Holland had 8 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and a pair of steals.

Ali Miller led the Saints with 18 points and she also collected 6 rebounds.
