SAUK RAPIDS — Anne Dunham piled up 20 points and 14 rebounds, and two other players scored in double figures for Willmar Tuesday, but the Cardinals couldn’t weather the Storm as Sauk Rapids picked up its first Central Lakes Conference win by edging the visiting Cardinals 55-51.

“Our defense let us down,” said Willmar coach Dustin Carlson. “We couldn’t execute against their zone (defense).”

Willmar owned a slim 25-23 lead at halftime, but the Storm (1-10, 3-15) outscored the Cardinals 32-26 in the second half.

Sauk Rapids starting stalling on offense with 2:45 remaining and up by five, but Willmar worked in a three-pointer from Courtney Magnuson, who had 10 points, to make it an one-possession game. However the Cardinals couldn’t get any closer as the Storm made just enough free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

“We didn’t get good opportunities at the end,” added Carlson.

McKenzie Hastad also scored 10 points for Willmar, which fell to 7-5 in the CLC and 10-9 overall. Dunham drained a trio of 3-pointers and Heather Horning added 6 points and 4 rebounds.

Willmar hosts Brainerd in another CLC game on Friday.
