Girls Basketball: Waska clinches share of South

PAYNESVILLE -- It was all Minnewaska as the Lakers swamped Paynesville 70-28 in West Central South girls basketball on Monday.

The victory clinched at least a piece of the WCS championship for the Lakers, now 13-1 in league games and 16-4 overall.

Morris/Chokio-Alberta (11-3, 17-4) and Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (10-3, 12-9) each won also last night to remain in the race statistically, at least.

The Lakers can clinch the title outright on Friday when they host BOLD or on Feb. 24 when they host Morris/CA.

Emily Roering, Alicia Pfeninger and Cassie Jacobs each scored 14 points to lead Minnewaska.

Jordan Spaulding put up 10 points for the Bulldogs.

Morris/Chokio-Alberta shot 45 percent from the floor (19 of 42) and sank 23-of-30 free throws to conquer the Thunder Hawks.

Scoring was balanced with Nicole Gillespie getting 14 points, Mary Rentz 11 and Megan Dierks 10.

Dierks also nabbed 10 rebounds.

Beka Schwendemann dropped in 14 points for Montevideo and Brooke Tastad came down with 10 rebounds, handed out five assists and scored nine points.

Beth Nelson's three-point shot triggered a 20-3 run by Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City in the second half, allowing the Falcons to cruise to an eight-point win.

Yellow Medicine East had built a six-point lead, 39-33, on a 14-5 run of their own before Nelson's bomb with nine minutes left.

Liberty Slinden worked around the basket for 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Falcons. Kayla Dallmann contributed 10 points and Chastity Pautzke eight rebounds.

Jamie Baker scored 11 points and Aimee Johnson made six assists for YME.
